Former Darien first selectman Jayme Stevenson wins GOP primary in 4th Congressional District

Aug 9, 2022

DARIEN — Jayme Stevenson, a former Darien first selectman, is the winner of Tuesday’s GOP primary for the 4th Congressional District.

Stevenson earned the Republican Party’s endorsement at a convention this spring. But Michael Goldstein, a doctor, lawyer and Greenwich resident, forced a primary election against her by gathering signatures from GOP voters.

Stevenson received 9,961 votes — about 60 percent of the total, according to unofficial results posted to the secretary of the state’s website. Goldstein received 6,555 votes.

After beating back the challenge from Goldstein, Stevenson will now face U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, a Democrat, in the general election on Nov. 8. Himes was first elected to Congress in 2008, toppling Republican Chris Shays.

The Associated Press called Tuesday’s primary for Stevenson shortly before 11 p.m. Around that time, Stevenson stood up on a chair at The Goose in Darien as supporters chanted her name.

“We are the dark horse in this race, and we are gonna get it done because we’re fired up and people are ready for change and … our families and businesses need us in Washington,” Stevenson said. “We have a really big challenge coming in November. Let’s show them that Republicans are the party of the people.”

Stevenson and Republican secretary of the state candidate Terrie Wood were both at the Darien bar as results came in Tuesday night. Wood lost to party-endorsed candidate Dominic Rapini.

Goldstein did not immediately return a request for comment. Himes declined to comment.

Stevenson was Darien’s first selectman for a decade. She didn’t seek reelection to the position last year.

Before this week’s primary, Stevenson told Hearst Connecticut Media that her priorities as a member of Congress would include tackling inflation.

“Reckless federal spending, over-dependence on foreign manufacturing, broken supply chains, labor shortages and the administration’s war on the American fossil fuel industry is responsible for increased costs of essential goods and services,” Stevenson said. “We need immediate common-sense solutions on government spending, energy policy, infrastructure investments, public safety and education to strengthen our economy and improve affordability.”

The 4th District includes Bridgeport, Darien, Easton, Fairfield, Greenwich, Monroe, New Canaan, Norwalk, Oxford, Redding, Ridgefield, part of Shelton, Stamford, Trumbull, Weston, Westport and Wilton.

Stevenson won in every municipality except Easton, Greenwich and Oxford.
